Brief introduction to the Hospital

Prince Sultan Cardiac Center (PSCC) is a tertiary hospital located in Riyadh, capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), with a city population of 8.6 million people. PSCC is specialized in providing comprehensive therapeutic, preventive and rehabilitation cardiovascular services.

PSCC is part of the Ministry of Defense Health Services (MODHS) system, comprised of 23 hospitals which serve KSA military personnel and their families, as well as their employees. As a tertiary center specialized in cardiac services, PSCC also accommodates any KSA civilian requiring treatment in our center and any patient arriving with life–threatening conditions. Additionally, the organization also receives patients referred internationally.

The core foundation of our cardiac services started in 1979 as part of Riyadh Military Hospital, and in 1992 the center was officially established as an independent specialized hospital. In 1995 the center moved forward in the field of training and education in heart diseases when the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties approved the first fellowship training programs in the center within electrophysiology and interventional cardiology services. The achievement of becoming a teaching facility greatly impacted the value of cardiac care delivered in the region through the provision of advanced training in the field of cardiology to other professionals.

PSCC inaugurated a new building in 1996 and ever since the center has witnessed constant progress in the quality and variety of services provided to our patients. PSCC consists of two patient care buildings: Building 6, where inpatient care areas are located, with 186 beds catering for adult and pediatric cardiac patients; and Building 12, inaugurated in 2017, where Cardiac Outpatients and Investigation areas are located, with 75 Clinic rooms and investigation suites catering for adult and pediatric cardiac outpatients, including cardiac diagnostic services.

The organization has been acknowledged as a reference center for the treatment of cardiac conditions in the Middle East region, providing highly advanced treatments such as: heart transplantation, LVAD services, heart valve implantation through catheterization and complex pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, and has proudly achieved initial Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation in 2017 and the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) recognition in 2023.

Shared Governance

Shared Governance (SG) includes structures and processes within an organization and its departments, through which the employees share decision-making and accountability for patient care and workplace function. Shared governance in Nursing empowers nurses by shifting the focus from a top-down management style to a collaborative partnership between leadership/executive and clinical nurses.

The PSCC Nursing Department Shared Governance structure is designed to support all staff participation in decision making. Input and feedback from staff who provide direct patient care are essential in creating an environment of shared leadership. The councils are responsible for addressing areas of patient care, workforce engagement (staff retention), operational/performance improvement and professional development. The Shared Governance guidelines provide the structure and operational framework for the governance of professional nursing in PSCC. The governance structure recognizes participation from all members of the nursing patient care team and requires shared decision-making.

imageThe PSCC Nursing Shared Governance Model was designed by our clinical nurses and it represents all councils focused on patient care, where front line nurses must participate as members, with various roles.

Our model highlights the clinical nurses as the core of our Nursing structure with the Unit Based Councils represented at the center of the model. The Specialty Councils in the middle symbolizes the collaborations and partnership amongst patient focused councils of the Nursing Shared Governance structure. The Executive Council encompasses all councils with clinical nurse’s representations and it is depicted has the highest structure of nursing practice decision making process.
